Challah cover
The challah cover is an important part of the jewish tradition on Shabbat or Yom Tov meal. It is a special cloth used to cover the two challah set out on the table at the beginning of the meal. The presence of a challah cover serves both a halakhic and symbolic function, as it helps to sanctify and honor the Shabbat or holiday meal.
The appearance of a challah cover lends a decorative and ceremonial aspect to the set table. It is often made from white fabric with colorful embroidery, and may be decorated with symbols such as pomegranates, grapes, wheat stalks, or other images that are associated with abundance and prosperity. The challah cover also serves as a reminder of God's blessings upon us, as it symbolizes His protection over us during our meals. Additionally, some families have special covers that are only used for certain holidays or occasions, making them even more meaningful and special.
Symbolism
The placement of the challah under the challah cover and over a challah cutting board is symbolic of the manna that was given to the Israelites during their Exodus from Egypt. This is in reference to when Moses told them that it would fall for them every day of the week, except for Shabbat. In honor of Shabbat two portions of manna fell on Friday morning, enough for that Friday and for Shabbat. This is why two challahs are used at Shabbat and holiday meals, as they represent the double portion of manna that fell in honor of Shabbat.
The symbolism behind this practice is one of remembrance and gratitude for all that God has done for us. It serves as a reminder to be thankful for our blessings and to take time out each week to rest and reflect on all we have been given. The use of two braided loaves also serves as a reminder to be generous with our resources, just as God was generous with his gift of manna. By taking part in this ritual each week, we can show our appreciation for all that God has done for us and remember his faithfulness throughout history.
History and mining
The practice of serving food on three-legged trays during Talmudic times is an interesting one. This was done to show that the meal was being served in honor of Shabbat, which had just been sanctified by the recital of Kiddush. The waiters would bring out the trays only after the Kiddush had been said, as a sign of respect for the holy day. In our time Jews set the table with challah but cover it until end of kiddush. This demonstrates that the meal only begins after and because of the Kiddush.
Covering the challah while wine is being blessed has also been seen as a lesson in not shaming one's fellow humans. It serves as a reminder that we should treat each other with respect and dignity, no matter what our differences may be. This ancient custom has stood the test of time and continues to be practiced today, reminding us all to treat each other with kindness and compassion.
